The Arena was built as part of a master-planned waterfront design on the western edge of the city’s downtown Central Business District. The venue is designed as a multi-purpose event and sports center with the larger goal of bettering the region’s quality of life. The ground was broken on this dream in 2004 and was later completed in 2005. The grand opening of the venue included a Neil Diamond concert on December 2, with the first sporting event held 8 days later on December 10 as the Stockton Thunder beat the Phoenix RoadRunners 4-0 before a sold-out crowd.
